Alanya, The Stormy Day

The storm on the seaThe roaring sea

Despite the yesterdays optimistic forecast it is still cloudy, and it is drizzling a little bit. So, I continue my self-guided excursion program, instead of swimming in the Mediterranean sea.

I have bought one ticket for visiting two remarkable places at once - Shipyard and Red Tower. The ticket cost me 7 lira, and it was valid during 24 hours.

First, I visited the Shipyard, which is situated next to the cruise ship port. The shipyard (or Tersane in Turkish), consisting of five docks, was constructed in 1226 by Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat. It is 56 metres long and 44 metres deep. Remarkably, it is the only remaining shipyard from the Seljuks Empire. And these days the construction serves as a museum for maritime and ship.

The next attraction, the Red Tower, is located close to the shipyard. Actually, it was build as an essential element of Alanya defences, protecting the shipyard. The Red Tower also guarded the entrance to the harbour and protected the local fortress, standing higher on the hill, against the attacks from the land. Nowadays the Ethnographic Museum of Alanya is settled inside the tower.
Actually, the Red Tower is worth a visit at least because of the fact that from its top floor you will find the vast panorama of Alanya and the Mediterranean sea. No wonder, that this building is considered to be one of the symbols of the city, and it is even represented on the city's flag.

Finally, the rain has stopped. However, the sea is still roaring, and it is rather dangerous to swim. Though, people are having fun, trying to win a big wave.

Meanwhile, I continue strolling in the park along the seashore and admire the well-groomed flowers.

I really miss the good weather. I hope, that tomorrow I will be able to swim safe.
